Want you pooch to be a canine good citizen?  Then come have your pooch pass The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test.  The CGC Program is a certification program that is designed to reward all (purebred and mixed breed) dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.  The CGC Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Why should your dog have a CGC certificate?  Upon passing the CGC test, you may order a certificate showing your successful completion of the CGC program.  By having the certificate, many hotels, and restaurants, will allow your dog to stay or visit their establishments that they would otherwise not allow.  Many insurance companies will not underwrite mortgage insurance policies for certain breeds, but Nationwide Insurance will, if your pooch has a CGC certificate.  You may also order dog tags, bandanas, and patches to let people know your pooch is a Canine Good Citizen!

CGC Test Procedures

To receive the CGC certificate, dogs take the 10 item Canine Good Citizen® Test. Items on the test include:

Test Item 1: Accepting a friendly stranger
Test Item 2: Sitting politely for petting
Test Item 3: Appearance and grooming
Test Item 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
Test Item 5: Walking through a crowd
Test Item 6: Sit and down on command - staying in place
Test Item 7: Coming when called
Test Item 8: Reaction to another dog
