Walker hounds are an increasingly useless breed as more and more states outlaw hunting large game animals with them.  However, what people don't know is what wonderful pets they make - something like a big beagle.   They don't like cats, but that might be a good thing if you are a gardner and are sick of slinging cat poop out of your tomatoes.  No cat will come within baying distance of a hound, and that can be quite a distance.  Hounds are, for the most part, lazy dogs unless simulated by something they are bred to chase.  That's why they make good city dogs because they rarely encounter a bear or mountain lion in an urban, fenced yard.  Bad news for the bear or mountain lion if they do, however.  They will send it up the nearest pole.  Anyone with a little tiny dog should get it a hound companion to protect it from any misplaced urban preditors that could be creeping around.  Hounds are gentle animals who generally get along well with other dogs and children and have no need to eat your couch.  They are not high-strung like other hunting breeds can be, so make for a more mellow pet.   In spite of its country image, there is nothing more elegant than a Walker hound on a leash, with its long, lean body, swooping tail and long, velvet ears framing a Shakespearean face.   For anyone interested in a lovely, mellow, housebroken 18-month-old spayed female who is all of the above, see highplateauhumanesociety.org to find out how you might qualify to own this most beautiful of companions.
