We would like to introduce the new Animal Blood Bank at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Our community based canine blood donor program started last month and we are trying to get the word out to local dog owners. We hope to screen 1200 dogs every 12 months to create a large donor pool to serve the patients at our veterinary hospital. Donors must be between 1-8 years old, 55 pounds or greater, current on flea/tick/heartworm preventative medications, and never have been pregnant. Initial visits to our clinic will be for screening only. We are seeking the canine universal donor blood type (DEA 1.1 negative). Those dogs that are DEA 1.1 negative will be given free yearly blood tests, valuing at $300.
