One of our best trips with our 2 dogs was to Mendicino and Ft. Bragg, Calif. Dogs were allowed to walk almost everywhere on the trails and beaches! They have beautiful campgrounds there and when we rode the Skunk Train we found a great kennel to watch the dogs for the day for a great price.

Not to sound...

Not to sound repetitious from a members previous post, however I must say that my wife and I - also considered our trip to the Fort Bragg / Mendocino area one of the best trips we have had traveling with our dog. There were various lodgings that were pet friendly with ocean access and incredible views – some overlooking rock formations and arches in the water. The location we chose to spend our holiday even had a little welcome package for our dog at check in! We truly appreciated the extra care taken to make all of us comfortable. Our dog loved the miles of walking trails, tide pools and dog friendly beaches. Her favorite was an off leash beach (located next to our favorite seafood restaurant) where she ran with other dogs and played along the shoreline. We even met a nice couple and their dog from the Sacramento area, which were loads of fun to be with!

We have a fifth wheel trailer that we enjoy immensely because we can take our beloved dogs with us wherever we go. We have two pekingnese and a yorkie. Our favorite place to camp with them is at Westport Beach RV Resort just above Fort Bragg. They have a wonderful beach area that the dogs love to roam on. They always meet new friends there because it is a very dog friendly RV campground. Our Yorkie loves to bark at the waves coming in to shore. The campground is well lit at night which makes it very easy to take the dogs for a potty walk at night. Just writing about Westport makes me want to call and make reservations. See ya!

So far the best place we have vacationed with our dog is when we went to Sunriver, Oregon for New Year's. It was her first big trip with us and she had a great time, visiting with the other dogs at the house, and catching snowballs when we went to a park to play in the snow.
We are taking her to the beach next week and look forward to seeing what she does there.

Oh my Goodness! I think we should have a "gathering" at Fort Bragg!!! We can have a big doggie play day! We too frequently go to Fort Bragg (heading there next week as a matter of fact), and we have always taken our dogs...all Schnauzers. Billy, Sadie, Luke and Jake are all gone now, but they always loved going. Now we have Maisy and Koda and they have a ball there. These two have tender tummies, however, and don't always enjoy the trip over! It's always fun to open the window a little about a mile from town, and I ask them if they can smell the ocean. Don't laugh...when we head home they sleep just about the entire way until we take the last exit off of Hwy 99. All of our dogs have reacted to that exit...they know we're almost home. The noses go up in the air and they get restless!
We have trailer camped and stayed at motels and I'll say that Fort Bragg is a very dog-friendly place.

The best vacation we took with our dog, Riley, was to Carmel. The hotel we stay in is dog-friendly and they doggie-sat Riley while my husband & I attended a wedding. The manager let Riley be the front desk clerk and he greeted the guests and their pets as they were checking in. The grounds of the hotel are large and dogs and their owners can roam through the trees and landscaping. There are even doggie hook-ups that can be used while owners go in to get breakfast in the lounge.
Carmel itself is the most dog friendly town. Dogs are welcomed into galleries, shops, and have special seating at restaurants, even the fanciest places. Carmel Beach is a wonderful place where dogs can romp in the water and run on the beach off-leash. Great place for exercise in a beautiful location!
We love going to Carmel because the whole family can fully participate in many fun activities!

Jul 27, 2008 at 12:07 PM : Okay, well this...

Okay, well this wasn't necessarily the best place we've vacationed with our pets, but it was memorable with a bit of mystery thrown in. We took the grandkids and two Schnauzers camping in our travel trailer a couple of years ago in July. First stop was Portola so that Grandpa and Thomas could drive a train engine. It was a gift I got my husband and it was good for two people, and they got to drive two engines. Ended up that all four of us had the opportunity to drive an engine, but I'm getting away from the story. Our last stop was in Redding so we could see the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay. It was VERY hot, so we left the A/C on in the trailer and the dogs stayed there while we went into town. I had bought a package of Snickerdoodle cookies, in a hard plastic container with a pretty secure lid. It was on the table when we left. When we came back the cookie box was on the bench seat, right side up, with the lid on. There were about three cookies missing! Not a one crumb present on the seat, table, or floor!! There was but one culprit...Jake was the only one of the two who would jump up on the seat. Fortunately no one got sick, but it remains a mystery, because neither Jake nor Maisy would talk!! I'm sure Jake paid her off with a cookie morsel.

<itunes:summary>Okay, well this wasn't necessarily the best place we've vacationed with our pets, but it was memorable with a bit of mystery thrown in. I'm sure Jake paid her off with a cookie morsel.</itunes:summary>
