Just when you think you're one step ahead of the latest dog-related mess, something always thwarts your efforts. I went on a laundry binge and washed three loads of blankets, sheets, comforter, dog toys....basically all things dog. There, I thought, everything is free from dog hair and dirt for at least another week. I woke the next morning as Wiggles was throwing up the remains of her dinner on the freshly washed comforter! Then Amie decided her blanket, which she likes to sprawl on during the day, was too clean for her taste so she peed on it. At least the dog toys are still relatively clean..........
Just as there is never a dull moment with the puggies, there's never a dull moment around my apartment building. Last week Ruby made a lasting impression on fresh cement in front of my building.....my landlord was incredibly annoyed. He must have taken a broom and tried to smooth over the paw prints but some remain. Ruby left her mark. The mercury has started dipping here in Kansas City so last Friday I turned the heat on. Only it didn't come on and we woke up Saturday morning with the temps a cool 66 degrees. In my apartment!!! I emailed the onsite landlord (just so happens it's the owner's daughter and son-in-law) and was told a maintenance person was already notified. As of this morning, I still didn't have heat BUT I had the pugs!! Thankfully their little sausage-shaped bodies generate a lot of heat.....sort of like fresh out-of-the-oven meatloaves. Wiggles parked herself in front and Ruby rested herself against my behind and surprisingly I've stayed warm. I was going to get a space heater but there's no need! The good news is that when I came home from the hospital the heat was on....it was a balmy 70 degrees inside! The many uses of furkids!
Miss Ruby got her mother in trouble today! It just so happened that a portion of the cement sidewalk in front of my apartment building was being replaced. I was home finishing my residency application and stepped out the front door thinking that the new cement would be relatively firm.....you know where this is going, right? Ruby bounded out in front of me (as she usually does) and ran across the wet cement leaving her signature all over it! Her paw prints weren't deep but easily recognizable nonetheless. I tried smoothing over as many patches as I could but to no avail. Just got a knock at the door.....it was my fuming landlord. He obviously saw no humor in the situation. I could have predicted his reaction since he's not the most friendly of sorts. I'm hoping that if they can get one of the guys back it still can be smoothed over. Never a dull moment in the world of pugs........
Wiggles spent yesterday at the dentist and left minus eight teeth! Eight teeth!!! She was originally supposed to have had this done when she came into rescue but somehow it was overlooked. I knew she had some bad teeth by way of her bad breath but I had not idea it was involved so many. The vet said what's left isn't in good shape and eventually they'll have to come out. Poor little girl. She's a trooper though....she ate some soft food last night and has her appetite back better than ever today. Animals are amazing. If I had eight teeth pulled I can assure you I wouldn't be trotting around the park like she was this evening. She also had her long nails trimmed so I'm hoping she's feeling like a million bucks.
I've been dubbed the Pugged Piper by my dog park friends! As I was heading back to my car, Amie, Ruby and Wiggles were trundling along behind me and a friend called out that "there goes the pugged piper". Har har. Having three of the same kind of dog has definitely increased the stares of curious onlookers. It's a segue into promoting adoption when I tell them how I acquired Wiggles. Today marks a week that Wiggles has joined us and I'm impressed that she's made the transition so well. I think everyone has sort of found their place.....for Amie and Wiggles the priority is finding a comfortable place to snooze. I've worked out a deal with the dogwalker so she doesn't have to walk all three dogs at once.....Amie and Wiggles walk around out in back which is all they really need midday and Ruby gets to go on a solo walk. Everyone seems to be happy with that arrangement. Miss Wiggles is getting a dental on Monday. As much as I'd prefer not to put her under, her remaining teeth are in bad shape so it will make her feel better. Tomorrow there's a big pugfest fundraiser at a local park so it's time us girls to get our beauty sleep! We've arrived at day #4 and so far no fur has been flying among the girls. Amie and Ruby have been remarkably well behaved although we're probably still in the honeymoon phase. Wiggles has been adapting well....so well that she slept with her head on my pillow last night! She's still fairly quiet although she definitely has a spunky streak. We went to the dog park last evening and a bulldog puppy was trying in earnest to play with her. Wiggles wasn't the least bit interested and let that be known. I took her to the vet yesterday for a checkup since she hadn't been vetted since she was retrieved from the pound last March. Overall she's in good shape although her remaining teeth aren't in good shape. I don't like the idea of having to put her under but I may have to in order to avoid more serious problems in the future. Having three puggies is definitely more work but it's a matter of establishing our routines so everyone knows what to expect. And it certainly garners more attention.....I'm sure I'll become known as the "that crazy pug lady"!! Yup, I did it! I've added to my pug clan. I brought Wiggles home today!! I picked her up this morning in a small town south of Des Moines, Iowa from her foster mom. Actually, i took another pug, Tillie, up there so that she could be transported to her forever home in Des Moines. Tillie was a former puppymill pug who couldn't have been more sweet. Thankfully she will live the rest of her life in a wonderful home away from the demands of a breeder. Wiggles has done great so far. A little scared but I certainly expected that. She was rescued from the pound in Des Moines but there's not much history available. Her foster mom said when she picked her up back in March her coat was in bad shape plus she was missing most of her teeth so her tongue hangs out on her left side continuously. I can already tell that will be one of her endearing qualities. Not sure of her age but they think 8-9 yrs. She still has a lot of spunk left especially when it comes to food but that trait seems to be hardwired into ALL pugs. Ruby and Amie have been exceptionally well behaved....no tussles as of yet. It will take a bit but eventually we'll develop our routine so everyone knows what's expected. Life with the puglets has now become more exciting....... |
