Raisins and Grapes Can Be Harmful to Dogs

I received a forwarded email authored by an Ohio veterinarian stating that grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs and can cause acute kidney failure.  I checked and found a similar warning on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s website.  This really surprised me.  I had no idea that grapes would cause such a reaction in dogs!  Has anyone else heard this?

It seems to be true.  I asked a cousin who is a veterinarian and she confirmed they can be toxic to dogs, like chocolate can be also.

Did You Know… Onions, garlic, chives and other species of the plant genus Allium can be potentially toxic to pets?

Allium species contain sulfur compounds known as disulfildes, which if ingested in large quantities can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could even result in damage to red blood cells. While cats are more sensitive to disulfides, dogs and other species of animals are also susceptible to Allium poisoning if enough plant material is consumed. Therefore, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises companion animal owners to avoid feeding pets onions, garlic and other Allium plants.

No, I didn't know that.  Luckily my dogs turn up their noses at all vegetables (except those cooked in bacon!)
