Pets with Halitosis - (bad breath)
Call me crazy, but I like the smell of puppy breath , what I do not like is when a dog with bad breath comes up to me to say hi, and a fowl odor is present. Pets with bad breath may display, tarter build up and gum disease. If left untreated the mouth becomes a breeding zone for infection which can effect more than just the mouth, but also the kidneys and liver. Tarter Tarter formation is the most prevalent tooth problem of our pets, since they are not susceptible to cavities. Pets that are kept on soft diets will promote tarter development by the time the pet reaches 2 to 5 years old. The Gums The gums are subject to infection with swelling, soreness, redness, bleeding, and pustule eruptions from under the gums making it painful to chew food.. These infections travel through the blood stream and digestive tract that effect the organs. What can we do as pet owners to prevent this unhealthy and painful situation? We can start a preventive maintenance plan. This would consist of brushing our pets teeth regularly combined with tarter controlled bones and treats that help control tarter build up. There are many flavored pet tooth pastes and breath sprays that work together to fight against teeth and gum disease. Many toys that floss and massages the gums are out on the market today. Most importantly, regular check-ups at your Veterinarian will help in providing the best care for your pets teeth. It helps if you start your pet on a dental plan when they are about 8 weeks old, so the process becomes habit and the pet looks forward to the event with a reward at the end. If your pet is older, a check-up should be done with your Veterinarian prior to starting so your pets dental needs may be assessed. Some pets may have to under go anesthesia with a deep cleaning and scraping of the teeth, with having bad teeth removed before starting. Many pet owners will find if they have a regular dental plan their pet will not only feel better and live longer but also save the owner from expensive Veterinary bills down the road.
