Dog Blood Bank Accepts Donors
The School of Veterinary Medicine invites dog owners to bring their dogs to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Davis for the community-based blood donation program. Blood collected from donor dogs helps veterinarians treat a variety of conditions in dogs. Pet owners interested in having their dogs screened for blood donation may make an appointment by calling (530) 752-1393 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (option "O" on the automated message) or by e-mailing caninebloodbank@gmail.com. Appointments are available during the week and on the last Saturday of each month. To become blood donors, dogs must be 1 to 8 years old; weigh at least 55 pounds; be current on their flea, tick and heartworm preventive medications; and have never had puppies or been pregnant. The first visit takes about 30 minutes. Dogs receive health checks, blood-typing and a bag of treats. If approved for donation, the animal can return in one to two months for a half-hour donation visit. www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu 0 comments from 0 users
