Meet Sam Price - Dog Collage Artist Extraordinaire

Meet Sam Price - artist and creator of  My Dog Collage. Beginning with a great photo of your pet, Mr. Price creates a beautiful, richly colored, custom pet collage using recycled magazine clippings - and the result is amazing!

The artist will be exhibiting his work at the Wag Hotel in West Sacramento on November 14, 6-9 pm.

We think it would be fun to offer our site visitors a chance to win a Sam Price custom pet collage - so visit the site in mid-November for details on how to enter to win!

In the meantime, visit his exhibition, and enjoy this information about the artist and his process.

About The Artist
Sam Price, the artist behind My Dog Collage, explains his creative vision for his art:

I have been an artist my entire life and have always believed in the use of accessible materials as part of the instinctive process of creating art. When I was a young artist I turned to cutting up the magazines and newspapers lying around in my studio and gluing them to a canvas. It was revealed to me only later, how much history preceded this natural progression of using everyday materials as a valuable means of expression.

Collage as an art form has been in practice for many years. When Picasso began gluing pieces of wallpaper to canvas, he would never imagine the computer or its effect on collage that would take this medium to new heights 100 years later. Combining small pictures as the elements for color and texture within a larger picture, my work uses the same technical elements to conceive a portrait without the use of computers as a guide. Each piece of paper is cut by hand and placed individually onto the working surface, picked meticulously for its color and shape. I spend many hours simply digging for the materials that best fit the canvas, searching for the perfect match.

Likewise, for the past ten years I have been working exclusively with paper as an art form. It is within this medium that I forged a strong connection between my artwork and the passionate patronage of animal lovers. Moreover, I find great joy in using materials that have been put to waste and constructing something new and special from the process.

How Does The Process Begin?
Your pet collage always begins with a photograph, which can be submitted on Sam’s contact page.  The photograph serves as the only reference that Sam will have for your pet collage; therefore it is crucial that both you and the artist agree upon the photo before the work begins. Sam is happy to work with you any way he can to ensure that both you as the client and he as the artist are on the same page when it comes to the overall vision for the collage.

What Types Of Material Are Used For The Collage?
Sam primarily uses recycled magazines with an acrylic polymer emulsion, which is a sealant and adhesive.  The polymer emulsion acts like acrylic paint, but dries clear to fully preserve the cutout magazines.  All of his collage portraits are created on acid free gallery quality canvases.

What Sizes Are Offered?
The smallest size Sam offers is 18” x 24”. However, Sam can go as large as you, the client, would like. Custom sizes are also available.

How Long Does The Process Take?
Your pet collage can take Sam up to 3 months to complete so he recommends that you plan ahead with this knowledge in mind. To ensure the highest quality of work and your satisfaction, the process cannot be rushed.  A deposit is required to secure a position on Sam’s schedule.  Sam tries to prioritize his schedule in order of deposit and any special scheduling accommodations. After you have made the deposit and the collage is completed the remaining balance is due at that time.

Do You Create Collages Of Other Animals Or People?
Yes, the process begins with a good photograph and from there the content is limitless.
Sam has done portraits of people, landscapes, children, and all kinds of animals. If you have a special request for Sam, he is more then happy to work with you.

How Much Does The Portrait Cost?
The price is determined by the complexity of the photograph (for example, a portrait of 2 dogs in one collage) and the desired size of the canvas.  The price ranges from $800-$3000 and can be quoted via email or phone.
