Dog People - Cat People - which side are you on?
As a dog lover who has been allergic to cats since birth, I often ask myself the question - why do people have cats? Aren't they notoriously aloof? Finicky? Help me out folks! Are you a cat person? If so, why? Dog people that also have cats - I'd like to hear from you too. Are you balancing the overenthusiasm of your dog with something a little less friendly or am I missing some redeeming quality ??? I am a new kid on the blog here, and I want to hear from you.

I love cats but I also have loved the dogs that I have had in my life time. And now members of my close family have dogs so I get to go play and visit with them and still have my cats too. Cats are really wonderful little animals. I know people say cats are aloof and finicky but I don't see it that way. Cats tend to be more particular in their likes and dislikes ,IF we are going to generalize. But I know dogs right now that can be very particular for instance,Sammy ,my Aunts Schnauzer he has some very finicky eating habits. More than any cat I have known or other dog for that matter.Sammy is very strong minded to say the least! Cats are more cautious so maybe they tend to appear to be aloof. All I know is that evey cat that I have had the honor of owning and knowing have been extremely loving. Yes, they have their moods but don't we all. I tend to think they have the characteristics of humans more so than dogs and maybe thats why we tend not to like them as much as dogs.Could we be seeing some mirror images of ourselves as humans and we don't like that. We see mood swings, tempers and aloofness etc.. maybe we take it personally and the cat is just being a bit human. He or she might be having a bad day so he doesn't want to be pet or played with sound familar. Whereas the dog is usually lets go, I want to play and eat and jump on you, and be pet and so on...Cats tend to operate from free will, again like humans. They are tenacious in there habits and might not be quick to friendship. But when they know you are worthy of their friendship they are loyal, loving and they tend to know when you need them. And they are always around for you. At least this is my opinion. I have owned cats since I was a little girl both indoor and outdoor cats and I always knew they loved me and were around if I needed them. When I come home every single day my cats are at the door meowing wanting to talk to me and tell me all about their day and then they want me to pick them up and give them a hug and talk back to them and then they might want some dinner and a little play time then we curl up with a good book or watch some t.v. not a bad companion if you ask me.

In my experience, having owned both cats and dogs, cats are much easier than dogs. When we had just a couple of cats we could travel and have a friend drop by and make sure they had food and water. Now with a 1 1/2 yr old dog it's a whole 'nother story! She needs exercise and attention, and more exercise, and someone to sleep with her, and maybe it's just those guilt-inducing eyes... posted by

I'm basically a dog person but I adopted a sick kitten this winter who probably wouldn't have made it to his first birthday without my intervention. He had a very bad upper respiratory infection along with many other ailments that rang up a $250 vet bill. My pitbull, Mommas, loves the kitten and watches it like it was her own offspring. They have become best buddies and chase each other through the house, sleep together, and play keep away with their soft toys. They share food (which I find a little un-nerving given the fact that Mommas could turn him into lunch if she didn't want to share her food). She lets him eat first until he gets his fill and bathes him also. I have other cats that hang around the house because I put food out for them and might let me pet them if they feel like it. But, I believe cats choose their owners not the other way around. My little guy follows me around the house and calls out for me when I'm out of sight. I feel that he chose me because I had ignored him the first two times I saw him hoping he would find his way back to his mother, but he stayed on my porch until I helped him.
