Cocoa Mulch Munching

Hi, y'all -- starting Monday, August 4, I'll be here giving you the pup's eye view of local "pet friendly" restaurants. In the meantime, I'm passing along a "heads up" from Amy at About A Dog pet sitting that's too important to wait!

Ever seen those bags of cocoa mulch available in gardening and home improvement stores? They smell heavenly. Bought a bag once and wanted to roll around in it. Problem? COCOA MULCH IS DANGEROUS TO PETS!

If you already know how toxic chocolate is for dogs, you're way ahead of me, here. There's a chemical in cocoa mulch, "theobromine," which can be fatal if ingested. Pets, like toddlers (and, come to think of it, sharks) tend to take experimental bites of things just to see if it's tasty. One bite can be all it takes!

You can get more info on our favorite "fact checking" web site, Snopes.com, at
http://www.snopes.com/critt.... Despite the fact that we love the smell of cocoa mulch, we don't use it in our garden for this reason. You can never tell what a pet will get it into his head to munch.

Back Monday with the inside bite on places to get good munch. Meantime, keep those tails wagging -- Joey the PatioPup, for PatioPaws
