Its that time of year.Hunting season for my cat JonJon. He is quite the hunter,he stalks his prey very carefully, not the slightest move without thinking of all the angles and of course timing is everything. Then POUNCE,he's got his prey a big juicy bugggggggggggg. And of course he brings it to me the greatest bug lover around----------NOT. Well thus begins the season and all I can do is praise him and try to hold back my screams.
I posted on Pet Talk about wet cat food and if it is necessary for cats to have it; I was told that wet food did not have nutritional value like a good dry food but now I am hearing different. So then I started talking to some people who make their own dog food and I was wondering if there is anyone out there who cooks cats food. Since the pet food poison scare I have been very leary of putting them on can food again. They really loved it but they adjusted without it better than I expected. The dry food I have them on is primarily fruits, veggies, nuts maybe i will have to look at the bag again and is suppose to be one of the best. They don't carry it at PetSmart or Petco so I have to go to a smaller but very good pet store and I like supporting small stores that have good reputations. But I am wondering what to do I have had 2 different opinions from vets maybe I should go for a third. As they say the 3rd ones the charm. Well I am tired and rambling. Anyone out there has any suggestions feel free to comment my way.
I just read on one of the post that cats have to have both dry food and wet food. I was told that wet food has no nutritional value for them and that they should be fed a premium dry food. When we had the pet food scare I did a lot of research on different dry foods and came up with Wellness. They have done great with it they seem to have more energy and they like it which wasn't always easy. At that same time I took them off wet food. But now I am confused I certainly don't want to over work their kidneys as the comment said so I guess I need to find another vet to ask.
Also known as the cat is kneading. Kneading for cats is a time of feeling safe and warm. A cat who kneads is very content. It is said that it takes them back to the days when they were with their mother. Cats who knead are suppose to be the most relaxed and content and they may be regressing to place of early childhood. Jon Jon is my boy he thinks I am his mother at least that is the general consensus in our house. You see I found Jon abandoned from his mother he was too small to be away from his mother and he was most likely not going to make it in this world. I was staying at a hotel and had just gotten back from dinner when I heard this little mew mew and there he was small and probably Ferrel. He would not come to me for anything. Until, I got on the ground laying on my stomach (still dressed from dinner) and talked to him for an hour and within that hour he started coming closer until finally he just walked onto my hand literally and sat there looking at me. For me it was love at first sight. He has never left my side since. And this brings me back to kneading he has kneaded on me forever. In fact he will get bossy about it if I think I am too busy doing something when he has to knead. He is my little baby no matter how old he gets. Now my other boy Percy he also kneads but not as much as Jon Jon and he didn't always feel the need to knead. Percy didn't start kneading until a year or two ago and he doesn't make a big production like Jon Jon. Percy could just be laying next to me and start kneading my arm or my leg unlike Jon who has to climb up on me and knead on my lap. Thank God for nail clippers!!!
My boys love to bring me their prey. Percy my beautiful blue eyed boy has this thick string like rope, that is his prey. He places it all around the house forgets about it for a few days and then all of a sudden I will hear this odd howl/meow and I know he is bringing me his prey. Sometimes I will wake up in the morning and it is on my pillow so I know he visited me with it in the middle of the night. My other cat Jon Jon is a beautiful cream mackrel tabby and he does the same with his prey except his is this ancient (should have been discarded but can't because it is his prey) furry, tattered, holey, beat up mouse toy. I have tried to replace it but nothing replaces the prey toy. I have found that all over, in the laundry,on the counter,in his water dish or his food dish,in the bathroom,in the linen closet in bed you name it that mouse has been there he will do the same thing he will meow/howl but if he does it too long his brother attacks him which I break up the fight that is sure to follow. I think it is adorable that they still do the prey thing even though they are inside cats. I always praise and thank them. After all its hard work stalking that string/rope,must be a snake and that beat up old furry thing.
My cats are indoor cats but I do let them go out with me in the yard when I am out there gardening. They love to go out and get fresh air and roll around on the patio maybe eat some grass and play for awhile. I had problems with fleas one time since they adopted me so I have been very lucky. But I noticed I was getting these bites around my ankles and at first I thought it was a mosquito but no I found a flea. So I checked the cats couldn't find any on them but I decided to spray the back and front yard. So far I haven't been bitten again and haven't seen any on the cats. My roommate wants to put advantage on them which is OK I guess but we have never seen one on them but I suppose its OK since they do go out in the back once in awhile. I know there is a neighborhood cat who is primarily outdoors and he sometimes jumps in our backyard at night he might be the culprit. But I was wondering if other people who have indoor cats who sometimes go outside like mine are being attacked by fleas, I haven't had to deal with this in a long time. I do have other family members who own dogs who go outside too hmmmmm.
I have read several articles about cats and purring. Most agree that cats do purr when they are happy or angry or stressed. It "the purr" starts in the brain of the cat,the sound is the vibrating muscles surrounding the larynx. Well for my boys it goes like this;I have never heard them purr when they are stressed or angry. Percy,he is my big big boy with gorgeous blue eyes, he actually growls when he is angry or scared. He has also been known to meow in this high pitch sound that is hard to describe and that happens when he is stressed. When he is purring he is always calm ,happy getting his scratches or pets and his best purr is when he is on the lap of one of his mommies. Which is a nice honor. He is our big baby boy. He could sit on one of our laps for most of the day if we would let him and he wasn't always like that but thats another story. Jon Jon is the same when it comes to purring he only purrs when he is calm or happy. If he is scared he howls this awful ear piercing at times, then deep and guttural howl. I would expect this sound from Percy because he is bigger and looks like he would be the tough guy but no it comes from the smaller, shy one. Go figure! I do love their individual personalities. So when it comes to the purr mine our happy purrs. They have other sounds for there other feelings. I love when they are laying around me getting their love, scratches, and pets because the purring is very soothing and relaxing and I know all is right in their world and mine.
Sammy is my Aunts dog and he is a very special boy. He is personality plus!!! One of the many adorable things he does is greet you with such love. No matter what, you can count on Sammy to greet you with barks and kisses. Another thing he does which I think is cute is when its his play time which is just about all the time he will go to his toy box (and it is a big toy box,he's not spoiled) he will eventually have most of his toys out all over the place and he will go to one toy play with it for a bit then go to the next. Needless to say we have to put his toys back in his box a few times a day but it is worth it to watch him play and go through his little toy rituals. I have never had any experience with schnauzers we always had big dogs labs,German Shepard's Doberman pincher all very wonderful dogs but there is something special about the schnauzer breed. And of course Sammy himself he is very special he always has a twinkle in his eyes and big big kisses for his family. It can't get much better than that!
We recently moved into a new house this last week and when we arrived the boys Jon Jon and Percy immediately began to investigate their new digs. Well Percy had to open every cupboard in the house and go into them, he absolutely loves cupboards. Jon Jon goes along with him but Percy is the one with the cupboard fixation, he loves the cupboards. Sometimes in the middle of the night I will hear him trying to get one open. I think its cute in the daytime but not the night. Jon Jon is big on going around to every nook and cranny and sniffing. In fact whatever we bring new into the house he will find it and sniff it, he could be sound asleep but that won't stop him. They are very territorial, very protective very much boys. Jon Jon likes to sleep in cupboards and dresser drawers. Percy doesn't sleep in the cupboards but he will sit in them for a little bit at a time. Well thats what has been one of the main focal points for them and the new house. Then comes the windows, the garage and of course the backyard but they can't go out in the yard without supervision. Tomorrow we are doing some yard work so they should be rather happy. Moving day came and I had to transport the babies. I thought I might have a little trouble with Percy because he was having some issues with the move but I was wrong. He was purrfect. He rode in the car, in his carrier with no problem. He didn't howl or meow constantly;he just sat there and watched me drive. Jon Jon on the the other hand was sooooooooo difficult. He howled and howled and I finally had to hold him in my lap, which I don't recommend doing but I had no choice and he usually responds to me if I can hold him. So I did and he shut right up and thank goodness it was only 10 minutes at the most away. But it was the longest few minutes until I could get him calm. I have had cats who love the car but not these two. But all is well and they love their new home.
