Raw Food Diet Question
I have a 13 yr old male Aust Shep type mix breed. The vet said she thought he had the beginnings of Cushings Disease and after hours of reading, I decided to switch him over to a raw diet. He's done well-breath better, coat better, seems more energetic, etc, but he looks skinny to me-like his shoulders look like they've lost muscle and suddenly he doesn't seem as energetic to me. What am I doing wrong? He's not liking the veggie blend and I put supplements/oils/egg over it to make it more tasty, but it doesn't seem to help. How can I get a little muscle and weight on him? I think I'm feeding him plenty, but I'm trying to gradually up it for his weight. I read cottage might help? Any advice for this 'ole guy that would really benefit him at his age?
Thanks, I appreciate your help and advice!

Re: Raw Food Diet Question
We tried raw food for our elderly golden (not sure how old because he was a rescue) and he seemed to love it but I didn't notice any improvement in his skin sensitivity which was the reason for the experiment. The weight loss reminds me of the aging characteristics of most of our older big dogs- the vet said that it was natural but that didn't stop us from trying to put weight on them. Without success but I wish you luck.

Re: Raw Food Diet Question
What kind of protein do you use? I know 3 very healthy dogs who eat a mix of raw ground turkey, oats, flax seed oil, and supplements like low-sodium chicken broth and nutritional yeast.

Re: Raw Food Diet Question
Congratulations on switching to a raw diet. Your dog will thank you for it!
The ratio ought to be 80% meat/10% bone & 10% organ meat. He doesn't need ANY grains or veggies.
My 62 lb. dog does well on chicken leg quarters for a main meal. He eats about 2 lb/day.
Finding inexpensive, good meat isn't hard in this area.
Contact me if you would like further info. There is a great website & chat area for Raw Feeding.
