fleas & ticks

My dogs are both protected from fleas & ticks by Advavtix. So, not really worried about them.
However, they do spend some time walking by the river. A tick hitched a ride home the other day. I found it crawling on me. I do not have the advantage of being protected once a month.
How do I keep these nasties from coming into the house? Do the dogs need to be brushed or washed everytime we go to the river? They are both short haired.

HELP

My dogs have never had fleas, anywhere I lived, but i moved into an apartment and the grounds are infested with flea! Anyone know of what works best, i really cant afford to buy the advantix from the vet, they require a test for heartworms and everything before even buying a product. 
Would love some suggestions, the shampoo doesnt work at all!

Dee the pitt, and Penny the bulldog, need your advice!
