Re: Share advice about pet health insurance

I am just in the process of looking at this now - it is very confusing and I have never had it for my pets in 35 years of having family dogs - but with the economy it is a little scary.

It is confusing looking at all the information on the internet and I think what has helped me the most is the chapter in Dr. Nancy Kay's book Speaking for Spot: Be the Advocate Your Dog Needs to Live a Happy, Healthy, Longer Life (www.speakingforspot.com).  It has a great review of pet insurance that helped me sort of organize my thoughts and several pages of questions to ask the pet insurance companies.

Dr. Kay's book was very helpful in helping to sort out coverages.  Our dogs have genetic health issues which are treated differently by the different companies and that would defeat the purpose for me to have something like that not be covered.

We are pretty close to deciding and I think in all likelihood the balance will tip in favor of getting the insurance.

Do as much reading as you can, know what questions to ask and then compare, compare and decide.

Re: Share advice about pet health insurance

I have VPI for 3 of 4/dogs. VPI will deny any claim it can to get out of paying like for my Weimer's Addison's Disease. I fought them for 6 months. Finally they paid only after I had to prove its not genetic! I cap out on her meds about 6 months into the policy.

They denied my Dalmatians Purine Crystal issues since its a Dalmatian genetic defect.

Denied another Dal's allergies but did agree to cover my other Dal's allergies b/c I filed a claim for the first one, it was denied and I admited it was a preexitsting condition, otherwise it would have been covered! :-(

Been with them 3 years now and not sure if I will renew or try another plan. hate to take the addison dog off a paid insurance carrier just to get her denied by a new one.

Re: Share advice about pet health insurance

I have had AKC insurance for my scottie for 2 years and it got to be quite costly but beneficial at the time.  I moved to VPI and I agree with SpottedFurKids, they excluded Claims with regard to allergies or crystal due to being honest and stating it was a pre existing condition.  I have had no other problems to state.  I would like to say that I was sure glad that I had insurance when we had to run my black scottie to the emergency vet after being attacked I submitted the claims and got back about 80% of the costs.  I have both my scottie's on VPI now.

Re: Share advice about pet health insurance

I've had VPI for 6 years now and have had very good luck with them.  Last year was the first year that the reimbursements did not exceed the premium paid; which was a good thing, meaning we had no major medical issues for my 10 year old Coton.  I did learn, however, that just like in "human" insurance it's often how you submit the claim that makes the difference.  I would shop around for prices vs. coverage in the future but would certainly always have insurance for my pets.

Re: Share advice about pet health insurance

I attempted to get insurance for my 2 yr old Walker Coonhound after he had surgery for a near-gastric torsion.  I/he was declined for anything but accident coverage.  I would still like to purchase insurance, but am unsure if any company would cover him.  Also have just acquired a Ridgeback pup, which I will get coverage for immediately.  Any comments as to what company to pick for reliability and consumer  friendliness?  My previous attempt was with Pet's Best.  Prices for most companies seem to be about the same, coverage similar.  Thanks,   Cindi/Sacramento
