This is my one and a half year old mule and his name is Surprise! Two years ago, I rescued his mom off a feedlot in Washington. She would have been sent to slaughter in Canada if she had not been adopted. A few months after she came to California, I noticed her getting a nice round tummy. I was hoping she was just getting fat, but a visit from the vet confirmed my worst fear: she was pregnant! What was I going to do with two horses? The vet's best guess was she would probably foal out in about six weeks, which gave me ample time to prepare for the new arrival. Two days later, I got a phone call from my barn manager saying my mare had foaled out somewhere in the 400 acre pasture and the baby had been "kidnapped" by other mares in the herd. They eventually found my mare, and brought her baby down the hill on a quad. I started laughing when I saw the long ears and said, Oh my gosh, it's a mule!! He got his name based on three surprises: His pregnant mom, he was born two days after I found out she was pregnant, he wasn't a Thoroughbred like his mom, he was a mule! Turns out I didn't have to worry about what I would do with two horses after all! I love him do pieces and he will always have a home with me. The picture was taken 3 days ago after he came back home after three months of training.
If I had known at the time that his mom was pregnant, I probably wouldn't have adopted her. Every day I am thankful she kept it a surprise!
