Sir Loin
Sir Loin is a 2-year-old Great Dane/Akita mix.

My dad adopted Sir from KATMOM, a non-profit, no-kill organization founded in 2003 to reduce the population of unwanted pets. Sir had been up for adoption for six months, touring with 'Katmom' to many adoption events in hopes of finding a loving home. We later learned that Sir spent many weekends at Petsmart during their adoption events, but it was the event at Country Club Mall that my dad and Sir first met.

Katmom explained that it was difficult to place Sir in a loving home because of his size, but since my dad has three acres, size was not an issue.

Immediately after the adoption my dad wanted to work on changing Sir's name and since he was only a one year old pup at the time, we did not think changing his name would be an issue. My dad just couldn't imagine having a dog named Sir, especially during the initial training and discipline phase, where my dad often found himself saying, "No Sir"! He felt like he was talking to a drill sergeant!

The week following the adoption my dad took Sir to Petsmart to pick up some supplies. As the two of them walked though the Petsmart doors, employees immediately approached them, all wanting to pet Sir and said “Hi Sir, you finally found a home”. My dad was thoroughly confused until the employees explained the many weekends Sir spent at their store during adoption events trying to find a place he could call home.

A few days following the trip to Petsmart my dad took Sir to the local vet for a check up. They were both nervously waiting their turn, when a woman with a cat walked in to the waiting room and said, "Hey Sir!" and lovingly pat him on the head. Again my dad, a very shy person, wondered how this woman knew Sir. She explained that she new Sir from seeing him around Antelope (where the Katmom organization is based) at adoption events. The poor guy (Sir) had been up for adoption for so long that people knew him by name all around town!

After realizing and accepting Sir's popularity, he decided that Sir should keep his name. However, he still refuses to call him by his full name, Sir Loin! Sir is very gentle social soul and my dad is very private. Ironically, Sir has managed to bring my dad out of his shell. Let's just say that Sir's size, extremely friendly demeanor (with other animals and people) and unique name prompt people to ask my dad questions, thus forcing him to be social! My dad and Sir are truly best friends that bring out the very best in each other. Truly a match made in heaven!
